Wands
Wands are probably the most important factor to being a wizard/witch,
and something that the Harry Potter universe has taken to its own
level. Harry Potter style wands are not like 'wands' that we are
used to seeing. They don't have the fantasy quality that most
people expect from wands. Instead, they appear realistic, natural,
earthy, and common place. It also should be noted that each wand we see in
the movies seemingly FITS the owner. You just couldn't imagine that
particular person with a wand any different. For example, Lockhart's
elegant and flashy wand fits his personality, atleast what he wants
us to believe about him.
Now, finding the perfect wand for YOU can be quite difficult. Unless
you know exactly what you are looking for. I suggest finding a wand that fits what you think a wand should look like. Different wand makers have different takes on how a wand looks. Also make sure that the wand fits well in your hand. This can be hard to do when ordering a wand online. If it's possible, try to check out wands in person. Hold them, see how they fit in your hand and how balanced they feel. All these will make a difference on how comfortable you feel holding it. Make sure you look around
at different places before selecting you wand. And don't be afraid to
get a second (or even third or twentieth) wand if one strikes your fancy. We find out
in the books that most Witches and Wizards have numerous wands in their
life time! One this page I've included places where you can buy a wand as
well as tips on how to make your own.
Whirlwood Magical Wands - I had the chance to see Whirlwood Wands up close at the LUMOS 2006 Convention. They had a shoppe set up with all of their wands there where you could compare and hold them. The shoppe owner and maker of all the wands, Gary Hall, was such a nice guy. He spent time to talk with us about our theories, his wands, and the conference. He's a wonderful guy, and really put everything into making these wands. I completely fell in love with the Ginny wand. It was light, nicely balanced, and fit perfectly in my hand. Not to mention the design and colour of the wand was beautiful. Mr. Hall said that he designed the wand FOR Ginny. I own many wands already, but I will definitely be purchasing this wand in the near future. If you are looking for a beautiful, well-made wand, I highly recommend Whirlwood Wands!
Alivan's Wands - They have even created imitation wands to match those of Hermione's, Ron's and several other characters. You can choose to buy any of their wands, which they offer in several different varieties of wood and magical cores. You can also order a special request wand using the wood and cores of your choice. These do become rather expensive. Special Requests are over $45, and the cheapest generic premade wands are about $38.
Phoenix Wands - These are another set of wands that have become highly popular with HP Cosplayers.
Abaxion's Wands - These aren't "Harry Potter" styled wands, though some would do just wonderfully for HP costuming. They have more of an unusual look to them, though I would stick to the wooden style than the others offered on this particular site.
Noble's Wands - The Noble Collection offers so many Harry Potter items, besides wands. Their wands are beautifully made, though not all of them are true wood. They offer wands based off the movies for the following characters - Harry, Hermione, Ron, Dumbledore, Voldemort, Draco, Snape, Sirius Black, Fleur, Krum, and Cedric Diggory. I personally own the Hermione wand and it is truly lovely.
Joe's Wands - I lucked out by finding someone who lived near me who's daughter had become just as obsessed with Harry Potter as myself. Joe was soon involved and has turned out some of the most beautiful wands that I have ever seen! I now own three of his wands- one made especially for me by Joe, the other I happened to see when he randomly made it to sell on Ebay and fell in love with and I am planning on buying quite a few more. My brother owns a wand by Joe, and several of my friends also have a wand by him. He willing takes requests, or you can choose from his premade stash. His wands, requests and already made, sell for $25.
Make Your Own
Until I came upon different people making wooden wands in the 'Harry Potter' style, I found a way to make one of my own. It was by chance that I had happened to come across a broken mallet (Used for percussion) that, with a slight bit of tweaking, fit perfectly for my first wand. Anything that you can find, even if it doesn't exactly go with what you had in mind, will work wonderfully. Below are a suggestion of different things that you could use to make a great wand!
- wooden knitting needles
- bamboo knitting needles
- the honey wands/droppers
- a dowel rod cut to the desired length
- an old drumstick
- have suggestion? Send it in!
We turned an old child's drumstick into a great wand for a friend of mine by taking Model Magic clay and forming a handle for it. It was the perfect wand for her Luna Lovegood character.
You can also get a dowl rod and carve out a wand of your own. This takes awhile, and isn't as easy as it seems. Make sure you have plenty of extra room, or dowl for screw ups!
